Like the proverbial Model T, the PlayStation 5 will launch in any color you like, as long as it’s white. If that doesn’t match your decor or taste, a company called PlateStation has unveiled a series of third-party colored plates to make your console look a little different.
You can tint your PS5 in chromatic silver, cherry red, black, blue or jungle camo. To install them, you presumably pop off the PS5’s existing white plates, as shown in this PS5 teardown video — much as you’d do to upgrade storage — and pop on the replacement plates. Note that the product is not associated in any way with the Sony or PlayStation brands.
These appear to be some of the first of what will no doubt be many customization options for the PS5. That’s especially likely given the general criticism and memes of its large and asymmetrical design and the fact that many folks would prefer a color other than white. You can see all of PlateStation’s covers here — they’re now up for pre-order at $40 with a 10-day return policy.
CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 will be backwards compatibile on PlayStation 5. The PlayStation 4 version “will work on PS5 on launch day,” the studio said. It previously noted that Cyberpunk 2077 would support Microsoft’s Smart Delivery system, meaning the Xbox One version will work on Xbox Series X from the jump.
Whether you buy it for PS4 or Xbox One, you’ll get a free upgrade to a version optimized for PS5 or Xbox Series X that takes “full advantage of the next-gen hardware.” You might have to wait quite some time to see a virtual Keanu Reeves in all his next-gen glory, though. On an investor call Thursday, CD Projekt Red couldn’t say for sure whether it’d be able to roll out the update in 2021.
The publisher just delayed the action-adventure RPG once again from September to November 19th, noting that it needs more time to make sure Cyberpunk 2077 works as smoothly as possible before launch day. It’s a little unclear whether it’ll arrive before or after PS5 and XSX are released -- they’ll both be out sometime this holiday season. But whenever both your next-gen console of choice and the game are out in the wild, you now know you’ll get to play Cyberpunk 2077 on it.
The PlayStation 5 was finally unveiled last week and whatever you make of the design, we can probably agree that it’s something of a departure from the console’s previous iterations. Now, PlayStation’s head of UX design has said we can expect the same for its user interface.
A new interface was always on the cards — something that was confirmed last week after we were given a quick demonstration of the start-up screen. But in a LinkedIn thread, Matt MacLaurin said the team has created a “100 percent overhaul of the PS4 UI and some very different new concepts.” He added that the PS5 OS is “more subtle than flashy, but no pixel is untouched,” and that as a UI “it’s practical first, but it’s a whole new visual language and a complete rearchitecting of the user interface.” No word yet on when we’ll get a proper look at it — soon, for sure — but it certainly seems like the PS5 has more surprises in store.
